Improving the way students study
Examfit is the latest project of The Career Portal, a leading online education company. Founded in 2014 by George Rendel, their ventures to date include The Medic Portal and The Lawyers Portal – content-led websites that partner with schools to provide specialised advice for aspiring medical and law students.
In 2018, The Career Portal team decided to expand their offering into tutoring tools to help students study online. They recognised that a big draw of student traffic is past papers for STEM subjects, and recognised a niche for a platform that would give students an improved way to mark their tests.
This resource would ideally give users new insight into their performance and help them improve their results over time.
With our help, their vision became the Examfit revision platform.

Creating useful tools from scratch
When the Examfit team brought their idea to us at the end of 2018, we were keen to take on the project and create this useful resource. We agreed to build the marking tool in Ruby, which would allow us to get the product to market quickly.
First, we created functionality to allow students to search for, filter, save and self-mark relevant papers. Second, we created a system to generate accurate marks for the tests and data about the user’s strongest and weakest topics in just a few clicks. Then, we began work on the next phase – a tool for generating customised papers that will make practice possibilities endless.
The platform makes it easy for students to review their progress and make improvements – past paper practice taken to the next level. In the first three months since going live, the platform saw over 3k students answering 140k questions, and generated nearly 5k new practice papers. Impressive!
