The low down on what’s on in Bristol and Bath for tech events and meet-ups for July.

We might be a little late to the party this month, but we couldn’t go on without giving you an idea of what’s on in Bristol and Bath this month for all things tech. We’ll be at a few of these – namely the South West Founders meet-up this Weds (13th), the Bristol Entrepreneurs and Opportunity Seekers night at Llandoger Trow on Monday 18th and the TechSPARK Techie Brekkie on Tuesday 19th – so, come and say hi if you’re there.
Tuesday 12th/19th July 2016 – 10am to 1pm – Beatroot Cafe, 20-21 Lower Park Row, Bristol, BS1 5BN
This group get together is all about getting to grips with Javascript. So far, they’ve been looking at the book,
Eloquent Javascript, as a base. Throughout 2016, the group have been focusing on utilising technologies such as Node and React, then sharing their experiences.
If you have a basic knowledge of Javascript, that’s great. If not, feel free to have a look at

SWUX are putting on a talk by James Land at CX Partners – having spent nearly 20 years in user research, he’s worked for people such as eBay, British Airways, Unilever and the BBC. Currently, he’s focusing on research innovation at CX Partners, but his “first love” is the technical side of qualitative interviewing.
This talk will introduce you to a core method of analysing qualitative data, plus a few extra tricks and techniques to help you get extra value out of your research projects.

This Techie Brekkie is all about SXSW – South by South West, a music/indie film/emerging tech conference based in Austin, Texas (USA). In a talk from Gabby, she will demonstrate how to convince your boss to let you go, justify the cost and how to measure the value of investment of your attendance.

The Bristol Clojurians group are having a talk by Kris Jacobs about his implementation of the
CHIP-8 virtual machine in Clojure. His talk will start around 6:30pm, followed by food and discussion, as well as a programming session in Clojure afterwards.

Join the monthly meet-up for start-up founders, old, new and aspiring, to talk about your business ideas. Entrepreneurs and tech investors are welcome, but freelancers, consultants, lawyers and other service providers are discouraged, as the meet-up is more about founding or mentoring start-up businesses. It’s a very casual evening, so there’s a strict ‘no selling’ policy.

An agenda-free evening where you can come along to chat about Elixir/Phoenix/Erlang or bring your laptop, pair up and tackle a digital problem you’ve been having.

If you’re looking for inspiration for something to do with the kids on a Saturday afternoon, look no further. The Guild co-working spaace are running workshops for children in KS2 and KS3 (aged 7-14) to experiment with making interactive graphics, websites and digital story making.
Tickets are available for the next few Saturdays in July. Please bring your own laptop, if you can.
Monday 18th July 2016 – 7pm to 10pm – Llandoger Trow, King Street, Bristol, BS1 4ER
Present your business, project or ideas and receive feedback at this evening of networking at the Bristol Entrepreneurs and Opportunity Seekers event. Each talk should be 3-4 minutes long, then rounded up with a short Q&A/brainstorming session to help the presenter – there’s a maximum of 6 presenters and afterwards, an opportunity to mingle with the group.
If you’re not up for presenting your ideas just yet, why not come along and be part of the audience, offering support to those that pitch, and get to know fellow entrepreneurs.

Using start-ups that have grown from 0 – 10+ million users in a short space of time as a guide (I’m looking at you, Dropbox, Airbnb and Instagram), this TechieBrekkie looks at how a few growth hacks in your marketing strategy can make the difference between success and failure.
Speaker Tom Dewhurst, founder/CEO of
Ordoo, will discuss how you can adopt the ‘growth hacker mindset’, use its’ process and methodologies to understand the customer journey and “build a product with virality and growth at its’ core.”

A chance for Developers in Bristol to get together and work on projects, learn and share with others in an informal setting. Plenty of power outlets, good wi-fi and table football/tennis. TechSPARK are putting on a mid-summer get together, celebrating the growth of the SPARK cluster. It’ll be an evening to relax and socialise, and thanks to the Enterprise Europe Network, there will also be some food and fizz.

For July’s Girl Geek Dinner, User Experience Designer, Tamara Chehayeb Makarem will be exploring user interactions in her talk on ‘Body as Interface’ and Jennifer Gaudion – a Software Developer (both at
Scott Logic), will be looking at examining the ways we can interpret data for the body in her talk, ‘Interpreting the Body’.
Come along early for pre-dinner mingling. As it’s a ‘girl geek dinner’, it’s requested that all male ‘geeks’ who wish to attend do so with a female friend (add a +1 on meetup). Make sure to book your space!

Bath: Hacked are restarting their regular evening meet-ups, focusing on learning new skills and tools. This is a chance to take time to look at some of their recently publised data and explore ways in which to use it.
The topics/data sets they’ll be looking at this evening are “School Power!” – a means for presenting energy usage to schools to help them be more efficient – and “Who you going to call?” – a tool to help residents ask for help from the right local organisations. BYO laptop!

Bristol’s TechSPARK are following on from their partner group, BathSPARK’s coffee and networking events, and are starting up their own version this summer. This evening features talks by Mark Skinner and Simon Hearne. Mark’s talk will be on “Designing for performance: tales from the front-line” – if a site isn’t designed with performance in mind, it’s not likely to be fast. So how do you design for performance?; Simon’s topic of choice is “CPU is the next great web performance challenge” – as we rely on our customer’s browser to process large scale JavaScript applications and communicate in real-time, the increasing diversities of devices and network connections means that ensuring a fast experience is nearly impossible. The challenge is to understand how the CPU will be affected by web performance in 2016.

StartUp Britain is a national enterprise campaign that provides free mentoring, advice and workshops to aspiring/early-stage entrepreneurs, and they’re going on tour this summer. It’s ‘powered’ by Natwest and sponsored by 123Reg and .UK, so come down any time between 10am and 4pm for assistance setting up your website, expert advice from local accountants/lawyers, networking with local entrepreneurs, and guidance from a professional business coach, amongst many more helpful things.

Bristol Media Tuesdays are informal networking events for BM members and non-members alike to get together and chat the media industry in the South West, including subjects such as graphic design, PR, marketing, animation, web design, digital media etc. Regular attendees include freelancers and business owners/employees, so there’s a guaranteed mix of interesting people.

Come meet up with young entrepreneurs, aspiring or otherwise, for an informal networking event – discuss ideas, business dreams and experiences with other entrepreneurs. Later in the evening, there’ll also be a speaker who will share their story and give motivational talk to attendees, then another who will take part in a Q&A session where you can find out about their business and starting up your own.
The event generally runs for 2 hours – kick off for networking and introductions from the team starting at 7:30pm, with the two speakers starting at 8:10pm and 8:30pm, respectively. Follow the
